What Information Do I Need to Report to My DSO During OPT

Updated: Jul 6, 2024

During your OPT (Optional Practical Training) period, it's essential to keep your designated school official (DSO) updated with accurate and timely information. You need to report your employment details, including the name and address of your employer, your job title, and a brief explanation of how your job relates to your major field of study. Additionally, you must report any changes to your employment status, such as starting a new job, changing employers, or ending employment. This reporting helps ensure your SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) record is up to date, maintaining your legal F-1 status.

How Often Do I Need to Report My Employment Status?

You are required to report your employment status to your DSO every time there is a change. Initially, you should report your employment within 10 days of starting a new job. If you change employers, end employment, or experience any significant changes in your employment circumstances, you must report these updates within 10 days as well. Additionally, even if there are no changes, you should check in with your DSO every six months to confirm that your SEVIS record accurately reflects your current employment and address details. Regular reporting helps you stay compliant with USCIS regulations and avoid potential issues with your F-1 status.

How Do I Report Changes in My Employment or Address?

To report changes in your employment or address, you should contact your designated school official (DSO) promptly. Most schools provide a specific procedure or an online portal where you can submit updates. When reporting employment changes, include details such as the new employer’s name, address, your job title, and a description of how the new job relates to your field of study. For address changes, provide your new residential address and update it in your SEVIS record within 10 days of moving. Keeping your information current helps maintain your legal status and ensures you receive important communications regarding your F-1 status and OPT period.
